TARGET GROUP
Candidate numbers are limited to 16 participants (for ZEWA Courses and 12 for Advanced ZEWA Courses) to ensure quality attention to each candidate, and it is intended for wildlife veterinarians, zoo veterinarians, university veterinary personnel involved in teaching wildlife management, and university students in the last two years of studies, with a special interest in wildlife.
LECTURERS
Dr Aleksandr Semjonov is veterinary anesthesiologist, lecturer and head of clinical operations at Estonian University of Life Sciences, and clinical adviser of Tsavran Pharmaceuticals. Dr Semjonov is based in Estonia and works as practicing anesthesiologist for zoo and wild animals around the world doing main research in investigation of novel anesthetics in number of species of wild animals. Being a zoo vet Aleksandr has an expertise in long-term anaesthesia for surgical precedures. Dr Semjonov is specialized
in anesthesia of carnivores, large ruminants, giraffes and elephants.
Dr Cobus Raath spent the first 11 years of his working life as the veterinarian for the in Kruger National Park, South Africa. After he left Kruger National Park in 1996 and set up a company specializing in wildlife capture and relocation, applied research, emergency wildlife medicine and combined the practice with courses in Conservation Medicine. Dr Raath is now Director of Tsavran Pharmaceuticals, a company that is actively researching and developing new medicines for wildlife, sharing information, providing clinical assistance and supporting master’s and PhD students. He is based in South Africa.
CLINICAL ASSISTANCE
Together we make available our experience in both zoo and free ranging wildlife, we assist veterinarians with challenging procedures, either by consultation or in situ.
Typical examples include long giraffe anaesthesia, standing sedation in elephants, polar bear relocations, and elephant collaring.
